Our Present Moment

Vision board created by the working committee

Community Advisory Committee

At the center of this endeavor is our Community Advisory Committee, composed of a mosaic of perspectives and expertise. Committee members include formerly incarcerated individuals, artists, mental health advocates, museum professionals, educators, community youth and elders, members of the local faith community, former corrections and local government workers, and those with experiences as victims of crime. Starting in December 2023, the committee met monthly to learn more about the museum’s past and the history and present state of incarceration more broadly.

Committee members used this information to make recommendations as to how to best share this history with the general public.

The exhibition, Behind These Walls: Community Perspectives on our History, open through 11/24/2024, outlines the process, research, and perspectives that informed this ongoing discussion.
